Fertiglobe’s consortium selects Plug Power to deliver electrolyzer for green hydrogen

Abu Dhabi - Mubasher: Fertiglobe and its partners of Scatec ASA, the Sovereign Fund of Egypt, and Orascom Construction have selected Nasdaq-listed Plug Power to deliver a 100 megawatts (MW) electrolyzer for the production of green hydrogen.

The electrolyzer will help in producing green hydrogen as feedstock for up to 90,000 tonnes of green ammonia production at EBIC in Ain Sokhna in Egypt, according to a press release on Wednesday.

The 100 MW polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) electrolyzer will be the largest independently owned facility in the world upon its operation and is the first phase in Fertiglobe’s green ammonia strategy.

Produced from renewable energy, green ammonia is a carrier fuel to store and transport hydrogen, helping in decarbonising various sectors which account for about 80% of global Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions.

The Executive Chairman of OCI NV, Nassef Sawiris, said: "Construction is expected to follow an accelerated schedule to showcase the green hydrogen facility during COP 27 in Egypt in November 2022, highlighting Egypt’s and Fertiglobe’s growing leadership in the renewable energy markets and commitment to a greener future."

Meanwhile, the CEO of Fertiglobe, Ahmed El-Hoshy, commented: "This is a huge step forward in our ambition to decarbonize our footprint to net zero by 2050, and simultaneously help our customers decarbonise."
