Cairo – Mubasher: TAQA Arabia teamed up with Somabay to open Egypt's largest desalination plant fully-powered by solar energy, according to a recent press release.
The plant's first phase holds a daily capacity of 3,650 cubic metres (m3), securing a sustainable supply of safe water to meet the resort's needs.
Meanwhile, the second phase will add another 3,650 m3 of production capacity daily, with the process expected to be completed within six months.
After implementing the two project phases, Somabay's renewable energy capacity will reach 7.50 megawatts (MW) of electricity and 7,300 m3 of water on a daily basis.
This partnership follows a joint deal, which was signed last February, to deliver natural gas through pipelines developed by TAQA GAS.
Pakinam Kafafi, CEO of TAQA Arabia, commented: “We believe this vision will inspire more companies to adopt sustainability standards, contributing to the country’s strategy to diversify energy sources.”
Ibrahim El Missiri, CEO of Abu Soma Touristic Development Company, stated: “Through these collaborations, we aim to expand our portfolio and actively contribute to the state’s strategy in this vital field.”
In the nine-month period that ended on 30 September 2024, TAQA Arabia recorded consolidated net profits after tax valued at EGP 424.87 million, an annual rise of 16% from EGP 364.98 million.
