Egypt Today: Rania Al-Mashat, the Minister of Planning, Economic Development, and International Cooperation, announced that Egypt's Economic and Social Development Plan for the current fiscal year aims to increase investments in the tourism and antiquities sector to approximately LE 116.2 billion, a significant increase from LE 72.4 billion in FY2024/2025. This represents a growth rate of 60.5 percent.
She explained that the private sector plays a crucial role in these investments, accounting for the largest portion at around LE 115.6 billion, which represents nearly 99.5 percent of the total investment.
The development plan also targets a rise in the number of tourists visiting Egypt, aiming for approximately 19 million by the end of June. Additionally, the goal is to increase the number of tourist nights to around 193 million.
Al-Mashat emphasized the strategic importance of the tourism sector in Egypt, highlighting its diverse and rich attractions, which provide the sector with a competitive global advantage, positioning Egypt as one of the world’s leading tourist destinations.
She further noted that inbound tourism to Egypt grew by 23 percent between 2019 and 2024, placing the country’s tourism sector sixth globally among the best-performing major destinations.
Tourism has become one of the highest contributors to Egypt’s economic growth and a key pillar of the country's economic model, as outlined in the "National Economic Development Narrative."
In FY2024/2025, the sector experienced a 17.3 percent growth, fueled by heavy state investment in tourism infrastructure, including the expansion of hotel capacity. This led to Egypt welcoming over 17 million tourists during the year.
Al-Mashat highlighted that the number of tourists in FY2024/2025 reached 17.4 million, up from 15 million the previous year, while the number of tourist nights increased to 179 million, compared to 154 million in the prior fiscal year.
