Egypt’s unemployment rate rises to 7.4% in Q1-21

Cairo – Mubasher: Egypt’s unemployment rate registered 7.4% in the first quarter (Q1) of 2021, up by 0.2% from 7.2% in Q4-20 and down by 0.3% from Q1-20, according to data released by the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS).

The increase in unemployment rate was ascribed to the second wave of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic which started in January, the CAPMAS said in a statement on Tuesday.

The total number of employees reached 29.284 million in the January-March period, down by 2.3% from 29.965 million in Q4-20.

The urban labour force registered 13.034 million individuals, while the rural labour force amounted to 16.250 million.

Male employees recorded 24.185 million, whereas female employees stood at 5.099 million.

Meanwhile, the number of unemployed people reached 2.155 million in Q1-21, down from 2.166 million in Q4-20 and down by 0.5% from Q1-20.
